Personal Support Specialist (PSS) Training Program
Our PSS Training Program offers a robust and comprehensive education designed to meet Maine’s certification standards. The 15-module course is structured to build essential skills and knowledge, preparing you to assist individuals with daily living activities in both community and healthcare settings. As a certified PSS, you’ll play a key role in improving the lives of those in your care, providing personal support that helps them maintain independence and dignity. Upon completion, you'll be equipped with the practical tools needed to deliver compassionate, high-quality care in a variety of environments.
Understanding Your Role
Personal Support Specialists (PSS) are uniquely positioned within the care ecosystem. Unlike Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), PSSs do not handle clinical tasks but instead focus on providing non-clinical support under the guidance of care administrators. Throughout the training, you’ll learn the specific responsibilities of a PSS, which include assisting with personal hygiene, mobility, meal preparation, and other daily activities. You’ll also be guided on maintaining proper boundaries and adhering to your designated scope of practice to ensure the best care outcomes for your clients.
Course Overview
Our 15-module training is designed to be engaging and practical. You will progress through interactive online content, supported by quizzes and discussion forums to reinforce your learning. Each module provides a foundational understanding of personal support, legal and ethical guidelines, communication techniques, and more. Additionally, the course includes live skills demonstrations, allowing you to apply your knowledge in real-world scenarios. Although not mandatory, we recommend using the Lippincott Textbook for Nursing Assistants as a supplementary resource to deepen your understanding of caregiving principles. This curriculum aligns with the standards set by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.
